Laurence Barratt is a Children’s
Book Illustrator based in Seattle, Washington.

When I was 4, my “ecole materneIle” teacher told my parents I was going to be an artist. I have been drawing, painting, sticking and glueing ever since, and that says a lot.

I am now a full time illustrator working in the art licensing field and in the children’s book market. I’m very lucky to be able to divide my time between Seattle, Santa Barbara and the South of France. I live with my husband and our two cats, Pinot and Nacho, who replaced our grown children when they left home.

My background and personal experiences are a constant source of inspiration. I grew up surrounded by geese, dogs, cats, cows, goats, mushrooms, you name it… My surroundings have always fueled my creativity and forged my passion to create unique characters, from digital to hand made patterned and layered textures. Old street scenes, past sceneries, street fashion, and architecture are all reoccurring themes in my illustrations, with the goal of capturing the every day structured chaos of our lives.

Words that sum up my personality: Witty, Quirky, Odd and Sassy

My happy every-things:

  • The sun

  • Drawing always, more and always

  • Textures

  • Patterns

  • Everything pink, orange and red

  • Learning and trying new techniques

  • A good laugh

  • Cakes ( mainly chocolate)

  • Writing children’s stories

I’m also a student in the School of Illustration at Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA. My math skills are disastrous and writing about myself isn’t my strong suit, as you can probably tell. :P
